Great article! I guess the goal is to maximize the peak with as much positive/truth-based communication and marketing.

It's nice seeing it all laid out - then we can remain "hopeful" during the dips and instead of giving up and give to the market :)

Britton, technology providers and end users use the Gartner Hype Cycle or Forrestor Wave in different ways.

I do think true innovation appears on a hype cycle, and often allows end users to add differentiated value by being an early adopter. There are multiple cases of the technology petering out or overtaken by new technology, in some cases a bad vendor choice sours the business users zest for implementation. Based upon my experience, the most effective use of I have seen is when a solution provider avoids the hype and focuses on the business value and unique differentiation of their solution.

Britton - Many thanks for the review. I think you and the other commentors nail it when you talk about the need for marketers to manage expectations ahead of the Trough. Being upfront about the challenges as well as the benefits, particulary at the early stages of an innovation's life cycle, shows credibility and lets the provider and adopter act as partners in figuring out how to work through the Trough.

Jen, yes, I think the answer is often to "keep hope alive" and get through the dips. Not always, however. Sometimes it's better to move on. Seth Godin's book The Dip is instructive on the choices we face in this regard. (P.S. I like your web site/info offer.)

Seamus, I know you have seen the application of this model in the real world through your work at Gartner. Glad to hear you think I'm on target with my analysis. I agree that the best companies -- those that are built to last -- will typically downplay the hype and play up the real value.
